KUCHING: A very modern pig farming concept will be applied to the proposed private-initiative pig farm to be established in Serembu, with a strong emphasis on technology adoption, sustainability and strict biosecurity measures.

Serembu state assemblyman, Datuk Miro Simuh, said the project would not follow conventional open-farm methods but instead incorporate a closed-house system equipped with automated feeding, temperature control and systematic waste management.

“We want to introduce a modern and systematic pig farming model in Serembu. This is not a traditional farm. It will use advanced technology to ensure higher productivity, better quality control and environmental sustainability,” he said.

Miro stressed that tight biosecurity protocols would be strictly enforced to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF), which has previously affected pig farms in various regions and disrupted pork supply.

He explained that the farm would implement controlled access points, disinfection procedures for vehicles and workers, regular health screening of livestock and proper quarantine facilities.

“Biosecurity is our top priority. We cannot compromise when it comes to ASF. Every movement into the farm will be monitored and sanitised. We will adopt best practices to protect the livestock and the industry,” he said.

According to Miro, the decision to focus on pig farming was driven by strong market demand in Sarawak, where pork consumption remains high across communities.

He noted that limited supply in recent years had caused pork prices to surge significantly, placing pressure on consumers and small businesses.

“The demand for pork in Sarawak is very high. Due to supply shortages, prices have rocketed upward. By increasing local production, we hope to stabilise prices and reduce dependency on imported pork,” he added.

Miro said the proposed farm is also expected to create job opportunities for local residents while stimulating related sectors such as feed supply, transportation and processing industries.

He emphasised that environmental safeguards would be incorporated into the project design to ensure proper waste treatment and minimise odour pollution, addressing concerns often associated with pig farming.

If implemented successfully, the private-initiative modern pig farming project in Serembu is poised to strengthen Sarawak’s food security, enhance self-sufficiency in pork production, and contribute to the long-term growth of the state’s agricultural sector.

Miro said the investor had come over to visit the proposed site for the farm, adding that the farm is going to be set up on a 60-acre land belong to an individual.
