What remains of the longhouse after the fire.

SRI AMAN: A sixty-year-old woman died in a fire that razed Rumah Sambau Sandai, Nanga Entulang,Jalan Stumbin yesterday.

The victim was identified as Yon Manjat. Firefighters who were clearing up the site stumbled upon her charred body at 2.45pm.

About 180 residents of the longhouse, however, escaped unhurt.  Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) assistant operations director Tiong Ling Hii said the fire started from the twelfth unit of the 28-door longhouse.

According to him, the longhouse was totally destroyed at or about 10.30am while a nearby stand-alone house was 70 percent destroyed.

One fire rescue tender, one emergency medical rescue services (EMRS) and nine officers from the Sri Aman Bomba station headed by Jilin Itar were dispatched to the scene following a distressed call at 11am.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
