KUCHING: A total of 600 Rhizophora mucronata mangrove saplings were planted along the Sejingkat coastline on Saturday (July 5) in conjunction with the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

In a statement today (July 6), the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) said the planting programme involved 100 participants and aimed to raise awareness of the critical role mangrove ecosystems play in biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.

“Since the start of the collaboration, nearly 3,000 mangrove saplings have been planted along the Sejingkat coastline, showing a shared commitment to environmental sustainability,” the department said.

FDS highlighted that the initiative also supports the Greening Sarawak Campaign under the Sarawak Energy Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021–2030.

“The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was declared by UNESCO in 2015 and is observed every July 26. It seeks to promote sustainable management, conservation and use of mangroves as a unique and vulnerable ecosystem,” it added.

The planting programme was also run in connection with SEB’s Sarawak Energy Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021 to 2030, in supporting Greening Sarawak Campaign led by FDS.
