MIRI: Sixty-six residents of Long Lama remain housed at a temporary relief centre as of 7am today, after days of rising waters forced families from their homes.

The SJK (C) Kee Tee centre, opened on Monday afternoon, is sheltering villagers from Pekan Long Lama, Kampung Kayan and Kampung Cina.

The flooding was triggered by a combination of spring tides and heavy, persistent rain since Sept 8.

Among those displaced are infants, children and elderly residents. Kampung Kayan is the worst hit, accounting for more than half of the evacuees, with 35 people from 12 families.

Pekan Long Lama has 13 victims from six families, while 18 people from six families in Kampung Cina have also been forced out.

Officials confirmed the total breakdown as 28 men and 38 women, including two babies and four elderly villagers.

The evacuation has mobilised a joint response of 31 personnel from multiple agencies including the District Office, Civil Defence Force, Social Welfare Department, Health Ministry, police, RELA and community security units.

Telang Usan Disaster Management Committee Secretariat spokesman Lieutenant (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri said no new evacuations have been reported since Tuesday, and conditions at the relief centre remain safe and under control.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as unsettled weather lingers across the region.
