KUCHING: A week-long narcotics operation landed 70 individuals behind bars, dealing a major blow to the city’s drug network and reinforcing police stand that there will be no safe haven for traffickers and users alike.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operation, codenamed ‘Op Tapis Khas’, was carried out from Oct 13 to 20 as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the district.
“A total of 70 individuals were rounded up for various drug offences.
“Seven were held under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of drugs, 64 detained under Section 15(1)(a) for drug abuse, while one repeat offender was charged under Section 39C.
“Also seized from them were small quantities of methamphetamine (1.89g), ketamine (0.54g), and Erimin 5 pills (0.50g) worth RM369.40,” he said in a statement last night (Oct 21).
He added the suspects have been brought to the Kuching Court to face charges according to their respective offences.
Alexson pointed out that the success of the operation was the result of close coordination between the district’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) and intelligence from the public.
“The Royal Malaysia Police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug activities. Those found possessing, trafficking, or protecting drug activities will face the full force of the law,” he said.
Members of the public are urged to continue assisting police by reporting drug-related activities through Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-2087222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-5929211.
“Drugs remain the nation’s number one enemy, and the NCID is determined to protect future generations from its destruction,” he said.
