THE organising committee of ‘Sarawak Celebrates Pre-Gawai Marudi’ district level 2017 in a group photo after the meeting yesterday.

MARUDI: More than 700 guests are expected to attend the Sarawak Celebrates pre-Gawai Marudi district level 2017 which will be held at the Marudi Civic Centre on this 19 May.

Marudi District Officer who is also Chairman of the organising committee Mackos Sibong in a meeting for the event preparation yesterday, said expected VIP guests at the event would include Assistant Minister of Local Government and Marudi State Assemblyman Datu Dr. Penguang Manggil;  Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly and Mulu State Assemblyman Dato Gerawat Gala; Member of  Parliament Baram  Anyi Ngau and Telang Usan State Assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

The ceremony will begin at 6:30pm and according to Mackos this event aims to strengthen the unity of the various tribes in this area and to highlight the ethnic culture, food and traditional costumes.

Kumang Gawai contest will also be held for Iban community and also Keligit Gawai competition for Orang Ulu community, he pointed out. Up to date a total of 12 participants have confirmed entries for Kumang Gawai competition whereas the Keligit Gawai contest has six confirmed participations.

Meanwhile, various other activities will also be held such as Iban cultural performances such as Biau Pengabang and Ngajat Ngelalu Ketemuai.

Other ethnic performances such as Datun Julut Kenyah-Kayan, performance by Berawan community, cultural performance from  Rurum Kelabits, guest artiste performances and lucky draws are also included to add merriment to the event.
