KUCHING: A total of 76 Sarawakians have successfully completed on-the-job training (OJT) as part of PETROS’ preparations for the upcoming commissioning of the 500MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant, scheduled for Dec 2027.
The training, conducted in collaboration with leading regional power companies such as Sarawak Energy Berhad, Malakoff Power Berhad, and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Indonesia Power, was aimed at equipping local operations and maintenance technicians with the skills needed for safe and efficient plant operations.
Participants underwent hands-on training at power plant sites in Bintulu, Miri, Perak, and Indonesia, gaining practical experience in modern power plant operations, systems management, and safety protocols.
In addition, eight engineers are set to complete the PowerGen Maintenance Excellence programme, while nine others will finish the Shadowing & Oversight Major Overhaul Inspection (SOMI) programme by December 2025.
PETROS vice president for Capital Projects Kidd Enau said the Miri CCGT plant is a key initiative to leverage local gas resources while supporting the State’s growing energy demands.
“PETROS is taking this opportunity to strengthen local capabilities and develop Sarawakian talent, in line with our purpose of harnessing resources for sustainable progress in Sarawak and beyond,” he said in a statement.
He added that the completion of training for these 76 technicians will help ensure the plant’s safe and efficient operation.
“Through our broader talent initiatives and strategic partnerships, PETROS continues to invest in our people, enhancing technical competencies and preparing Sarawakians to manage, operate, and sustain critical energy infrastructure,” Kidd said.
By developing a skilled local workforce, PETROS aims to maximise local participation in energy projects and create employment opportunities, contributing to Sarawak’s long-term economic growth.
