KAPIT: About 800 people turned up at a ‘Leaders Meet The People Session’ held at Rumah Robert Ngumbang at Nanga Sebatu Batang Rajang about half an hour journey by road below Kapit town on Sunday afternoon.
In his speech when officiating at the event Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is the Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development called on the community here to rally their full support behind the BN candidate for P215 Kapit, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi in this coming polling day on 9 May.
This is to give him resounding victory and a much bigger majority. “Nanta has won the previous general election (GE13) with a majority of more than 9,000 votes. For this coming GE14 let us all give Nanta a much bigger majority of 11,000 to deliver a message that we are united to support him,” said Uggah.
He told that Nanta has proven to be a capable leader during his one term as a deputy minister. “He was given the trust by the state government to represent the state at the federal level and since he assumed the deputy minister post, he has brought tangible developments in Kapit.
Under the 11th Malaysian Plan, more than RM500 million worth of development projects including rural roads and bridges have been implemented in Kapit and this does not include the Kapit-Song-Kanowit road development project,” Uggah pointed out.
“We are fortunate that we have progressed well because of our leaders who had voiced out our needs. Hence to reciprocate we need to vote for those who can bring us development and under the Barisan National (BN) manifesto there are programmes that include the improvement of the longhouses and economy in the rural areas, to carry out the perimeter survey of NCR land and so forth. We have a future direction,” he said adding that the opposition is only capable of finding faults of the government.
The setting up of Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), he said, is one of the government efforts to further develop Kapit as it has been lacking behind when compared to the other divisions as Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.
He disclosed that the land in Kapit has been identified suitable for agriculture such as the planting of high yield rubber and fruit trees include durian and ‘dabai’. He added that the government through the agriculture department has proposed to set up a collection centre for the purchase of durians and ‘dabai’.
On the issue of Native Customary Right (NCR) land, Uggah chided the opposition candidate for PKR, Abun Sui Anyit for asking the Member of Parliament to bring the issue to the parliamentary sitting. “Abun Sui was wrong to ask the MP to bring the issue of NCR land especially the Pulau Galau and Pemakai menua (PGPM) to the parliamentary sitting.
The issue of NCR land can only be settled by the state government using our own Sarawak Land Code. Now we are still in the process of fine tuning the land code for PGPM and it will be tabled at the state cabinet meeting soon,” stressed Uggah adding that the so-called lawyer is making business out of the NCR land issue where not even one of his cases has won in court.
On other matters Uggah told that his ministry was given the task to set up the Unit For Other Religions where the Chief Minister has allocated RM20 million to assist the religious bodies to further improve and upgrade their facilities including churches, temple and mosques.
Also present at the function was Nanta’s wife Datin Angelina Ujang; State Assemblyman for Bukit Goram, Jefferson Jamit Unyat and his wife Nancy Kuyor; State Assemblyman for Pelagus Wilson Nyabong Ijang; Walikota of Kapit District Council Philimon Nuing; Special Affair Officer to the Prime Minister Jackson Melintang, community leaders and about 800 BN party members and longhouse folks.
