KUCHING: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong has urged police on duty to be more compassionate and understanding when approached by the public who lodge police reports.
Making the appeal during a courtesy call on Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Azman Yusof with other Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) elected representatives, Yong said most of the complaints she received were about police personnel who took reports at counters.
She said the complainants were kicked around from one police station to another.
“This makes them feel desperate, anxious and unsure of how to proceed.
“People do not want to go to the police station unless they have to report something unpleasant like house break-ins or snatching.
Thus, police personnel must be more understanding and not give these complainants a hard time,” said Yong.
Azman, she added, responded by saying that the police officers on duty had the responsibility to carry out their duties diligently and do their best to help the public.
“He also called for close cooperation between the people’s representatives and the police force, urging them to jointly organise various crime prevention activities in order to raise public awareness,” said Yong.
Among those who called on Azman were Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Chiew Chin Sing, Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon, and officers from Sarawak Special Branch (SB) Department, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Narcotics Department (ND).
