SARIKEI: A total of 8,760 students in the Sarikei and Meradong districts have benefited from the 2026 School Uniform and Shoe Distribution programme.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii and Sarikei MP, said the initiative, which began in 2018, aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents during the school season.
The programme recently concluded its distribution for SMK St Anthony, SMK Bandar Sarikei, and SMK Tinggi Sarikei, involving 1,868 students.
“I hope this contribution provides a significant impact, allowing students to attend school with greater confidence, comfort and enthusiasm to pursue knowledge,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Breaking down the figures, Huang noted that 5,808 recipients are from Sarikei, while 2,952 are from the Meradong area.
During the event, Huang also lauded the Sarawak government’s progressive policy of providing free higher education at state-owned institutions.
“This is a major investment in the future of our youth, ensuring they can further their studies without being burdened by financial constraints.
“It clearly demonstrates the Sarawak government’s commitment to placing the people’s welfare as a top priority,” he added.
He expressed his gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his visionary leadership in safeguarding the welfare of all Sarawakians.
“Every child deserves equal educational opportunities. I urge students to use this chance wisely and study hard for a brighter future,” said Huang, who is also Repok assemblyman.
In a further show of support for local education, Huang announced a combined contribution of RM40,000 to the schools.
SMK St Anthony and SMK Tinggi Sarikei each received RM20,000 to fund their respective annual activities.
