SIBU: The 2025 Sibu Carrom Open held at Swan Square here recently successfully attracted more than 90 enthusiastic players from across Sarawak, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere that reflects the growing momentum of carrom in the region.

President of the Sibu Swan Carrom Club (SSCC) as the host, Ling Shii Ngie, said during the opening ceremony that the tournament was not just a sporting competition but also an important platform to foster community bonding, friendship, and harmony through sportsmanship.

He noted the strong support from players hailing from Sibu, Kuching, Bintulu, and Miri, which was truly encouraging.

This support, he pointed out, proved that carrom, a traditional game, is making a comeback into our daily lives and beginning to shine across various social levels.

He emphasised that carrom upholds values like discipline, focus, integrity, and teamwork, qualities that should be practiced not only in sport but in life as well.

He believed tournaments like these give young talents a chance to shine and help foster a healthier and more connected community through sports

“I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to Sibu Member of Parliament, Oscar Ling, for gracing the event and providing funding support for local sports development, sponsor for the generous venue contribution, Sibu Youth and Sports Department for their continuous encouragement and support, as well as the Ohaa Carrom Club from Kuching for their participation,” Ling added.

In his remarks, Oscar Ling praised the organisers for aligning the tournament with the government’s push for healthier communities.

He recalled playing carrom during his childhood with friends in open spaces, sharing laughter and connection.

“But with the rise of technology and virtual lifestyles, such interactions have dwindled – a major challenge for society today

“This is more than just a game. It is an attempt to revive our collective memories and rekindle the cultural flame in our communities.

“That’s why events like this are so precious. They give our children a chance to step outside, make new friends, and learn teamwork – all while preserving cultural heritage and enhancing community spirit,” he said.

He expressed hope that carrom will flourish in more places, with more community clubs established, turning carrom into a sport for all – especially as a healthy, fun, and culturally meaningful activity for the youth.

Earlier in his speech, organising committee chairman, Lee Kaw Hong, who is also SSCC treasurer, said the goal of the event is to promote and elevate carrom in Sibu and work towards expanding it across Sarawak and eventually the national level.

He remarked that the strong participation from players in Sibu, Kuching, Bintulu and Miri reflected the growing popularity and recognition of carrom among the public.
