90 nabbed, syabu seized in three-week drug sweep

SIBU: Two women were among 90 suspected drug offenders rounded up during an intensive three-week proactive narcotics operation carried out across the district.

Dubbed ‘Ops Tapis Narkotik’, the sweep was conducted by the district police headquarters (IPD) from Dec 1 to 21 as part of sustained efforts to curb drug distribution and abuse.

Police also seized 23.25g of drugs believed to be syabu, with an estimated street value of RM2,380.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said 18 individuals were arrested for possession-related offences, while 72 others were detained for drug abuse.

He stated that the 18 suspects have since been charged in court, with two facing charges under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and 16 under Section 12(3).

Offences under Section 39A(1) carry a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and whipping of up to nine strokes, while Section 12(3) offences provide for a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

Those convicted under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for substance abuse, may be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed for a term not exceeding two years, or both, and placed under supervision for two years under Section 38B of the same Act.

Zulkipli assured that police, particularly the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID), will continue to intensify enforcement efforts to tackle drug-related activities.
