KUCHING: A total of 919 people took part in the 916 Unity Charity Haircut at AEON Mall Kuching Central, setting a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) achievement.
Organised by Barber Boss in collaboration with Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii’s P195 Bandar Kuching Service Centre, the event was held from 10 am to 10 pm.
The initiative brought together about 40 barbers, volunteers and members of the public in conjunction with Malaysia Day, turning a routine haircut into a community fundraising effort.
Yii said the event demonstrated the spirit of unity and generosity, with participants coming together to support charitable causes across Sarawak.
“Beyond the record, the true win was in what the day represented — unity, generosity and coming together as one community,” he said in a statement.
Haircuts were offered at RM10 each, while senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students were entitled to free haircuts throughout the event.
Yii also contributed RM10,000 towards the cause and personally sponsored free haircuts for 50 participants as part of his support for the initiative.
He thanked Barber Boss for achieving the record, as well as the participating barbers, volunteers, organisers, partners and members of the public.
The funds raised from the event will be channelled to six charitable organisations supporting various community needs and groups in Sarawak.
The beneficiaries are PDK Sentuhan Kasih Kuching, The Salvation Army, Kuching Autistic Association, Sarawak Society of the Deaf, Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Sarawak (POCS) and Wishesland International.
Yii cited the collective effort reflected the importance of community participation and mutual support, particularly during the Malaysia Day celebration.
The event also provided members of the public with an opportunity to contribute to charitable causes while participating in a record-setting celebration.
