KUCHING: Statistics by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) so far this year have indicated 9,198 individuals were arrested related to drugs, comprising 474 suppliers, 1,853 possessors, and 6,871 individuals who tested positive for drugs.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that the total value of seizures recorded so far was RM137,492,969.21.

“The apparent magnitude of the figures may seem significant, in part due to the growth of our population. Just two decades ago, our population numbered only a few million, and it has since expanded. Therefore, even if the figure exceeds 9,000 in comparison to 2.8 million population, it still represents a relatively small quantity.

“Furthermore, it is essential to consider our standing within the context of Malaysia as a whole. When it comes to the index of individuals involved in drug-related issues, we rank 11th or 12th. This means that we are among the lowest-ranked states, despite the substantial size of our state and the openness of our borders.

“Nevertheless, it is worth noting that our record and index remain consistently low. In instances of significant drug seizures, it is often revealed through investigations that these drugs are not intended for local consumption but rather the state serves as transit points for transportation to neighbouring countries,” he explained.

Abdul Karim said this during the Anti-Drug Action Council (MTMD) meeting held at Baitul Makmur II here yesterday (Nov 1).

However, he added, it was important to stay informed as drug-related questions were often raised when attending events, such as youth programmes, dialogues, or town hall sessions.

This reflected the awareness of the people, he said, whether they are parents, teachers, or young individuals.

“Such awareness is a desired outcome. We should be concerned if the community lacks empathy and turns a blind eye to these issues,

“It’s the responsibility of everyone, including parents. We cannot place the responsibility for dealing with drugs solely on the police, the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), or any enforcement agency because drugs are matters that involve the community.

“Enforcement agencies are only required to control and so on. Parents, schools, teachers, community leaders, and so on all play a role. That’s why we cannot view it as solely an enforcement agency issue,” he added.
