948 flood victims in four relief centres

Road users were stranded between Selangau and Sibu yesterday after certain stretches of the road were flooded.

SELANGAU: A total of 948 flood victims were transferred to four relief centres here as at 3pm, yesterday.

Chairman of Sibu Division Disaster Committee, Sibu Resident Charles Siaw said the four relief centres are SJK (C) Tong Ah, Sekuau Community Hall, SK Bukit Arip Hall and SMK Ulu Balingian Hall.

“Currently five more relief centres are being set up and will open when the need arises,” Siaw explained.

He added that the evacuation operations of the flood victims are still ongoing with the Civil Defence Force, the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba).

Certain stretches along the Sibu-Bintulu Road were inundated by flood water and some (stretches) were damaged which are posing danger to road users.

Some stretches of the Sibu-Selangau Road have started to be inundated by flood water and are impassable to vehicles.

The incessant rain, which is expected to continue in the next few days in all divisions of the state has also flooded schools and longhouses.

Certain stretches of the Sibu-Bintulu Road are also flooded while some stretches are damaged and posing danger to road users.

In a separate incident, passengers of an express bus have some anxious moments when the bus they were travelling in almost toppled in a flooded stretch of the Sibu-Selangau Road.

However, all the passengers were moved safely and as at press time they are still waiting for another bus.
