MIRI: A total of 97 teams, including an international contingent from Bahrain, are competing in the 5th Sarawak Open Boxing International (SOBI) 2026 at the Miri Indoor Stadium.

The competition acts as a platform to identify future SUKMA prospects and raise the standard of boxing in the region.

The four-day championship, which began from Jun 23-26, features competitions in the Elite, Junior and SUKMA age-group categories.

Organised by the Sarawak Sports Corporation in collaboration with the Sarawak Boxing Association, it aims to expose local boxers to international competition while strengthening the state’s athlete development pathway.

The presence of Bahrain’s two-member team underscores the tournament’s growing international profile, offering local fighters valuable experience against overseas opponents.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said sporting events such as SOBI play an important role in talent development while contributing to Sarawak’s growing sports tourism sector.

He said boxing cultivates discipline, resilience and determination, qualities that extend beyond sport and help shape future leaders and responsible citizens.

Ting noted that international tournaments not only provide competitive opportunities for athletes but also promote cultural exchange and strengthen ties among participating countries and regions.

The tournament has previously been held in Kuching and Sri Aman before making its debut in Miri, reflecting continued efforts to expand the reach of boxing development throughout Sarawak.

Sarawak Boxing Association president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo said the championship serves as an important platform to identify and nurture emerging talents, particularly those being groomed for future SUKMA Games.

He said exposure to international competition is crucial in preparing young athletes to compete at higher levels and raising the overall standard of boxing in the state.

Beyond the competition, the event is expected to generate economic activity for Miri through increased visitor arrivals, supporting Sarawak’s aspiration to become a leading destination for international sporting events.
