KUCHING: Traffic police took more than 10 motorcycles off the road every hour on average during a nine-and-a-half-hour operation along Jalan Tun Sallehuddin here, with 99 motorcycles seized.
‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, which began at 8.30pm on Saturday (Sept 12) and ended at 6am yesterday (Sept 13), also saw 222 traffic summonses issued for various offences.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a total of 208 individuals and 187 vehicles were inspected during the operation.
“From the figure, 99 motorcycles were impounded under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further inspections.
“A 17-year-old male rider was also arrested after he was suspected of using a false licence plate on his motorcycle.
“The teenager is being investigated under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and his motorcycle was also seized,” he said.
Alexson advised the public to obey traffic laws, stay away from illegal street activities and refrain from modifying the original structure of their vehicles.
The operation was mounted by the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division and the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division, with support from the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.
Four senior police officers and 34 personnel from the respective units were involved in the operation, which aimed at curbing street activities and other traffic offences, while ensuring motorists complied with road regulations.
