SIBU: The 9th Malaysian Infantry Brigade, known as 9th Brigade, is expected to bring more vibrance to the Saratok-level Sarawak Day celebration, scheduled to be held on July 26.

Discussions regarding the brigade’s involvement took place during an official visit by Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri to the 9th Brigade headquarters here.

Joining the visit was the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association PVATM Sarawak Branch, led by its chairman Pemanca Sahari Gani.

According to Mohamad, the Sarawak Day celebration in Saratok is one of the annual programmes jointly organised by the Kalaka ADUN Service Centre, PVATM Saratok Branch and the Saratok District Office.

“I had the opportunity to join the Saratok PVATM, led by Pemanca Sahari, for a courtesy call on the Commander of the 9th Brigade, Brigadier General Jafri Sulaiman.

“The purpose of our visit was to strengthen relations and to discuss preparations for the Sarawak Day celebration in Saratok on July 26. We are grateful for the positive response we received,” he said.

He expressed hope that the event would be a vibrant and meaningful occasion.

“Our intention is to instil a sense of patriotism within the Saratok community through the Sarawak Day celebration.

“It is a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of our national heroes, who gave their lives and limbs to uphold the sovereignty and peace of our nation,” he said.

Sarawak Day, observed annually on July 22, holds deep historical significance.

It commemorates the transfer of Sarawak’s administration to the local people in 1963, when Sarawak officially gained self-government from British colonial rule.

“This date marked the beginning of self-rule by Sarawakians, preceding the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.

Sarawak Day also serves as a reminder of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, MA63, and the special rights assured to Sarawak upon joining the federation.

Mohamad also commended the PVATM Saratok Branch for their active role in organising programmes and initiatives that support veterans and their families.
