KUCHING: The Chairman of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain yesterday stated the late delivery of the new wing of Riverside Majestic Hotel was due to the failure of previous contractors.
The project, now undertaken by SEDC’s subsidiary, Sedaju Sdn Bhd has been granted a total of seven extensions of time (EOT).
Sedaju Sdn Bhd, he said, had identified that one of the main problems was due to technical issues related to the foundation of the site.
“Final touches are being put on the new wing right now. If everything goes smoothly, the hotel will open next month,” Aziz told a press conference after the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SEDC and UDA Holdings Bhd (UDA) yesterday at Grand Margherita Hotel.
UDA was represented by its Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah.
At the same time, Aziz also denied claims that the project had been delayed because of the increased cost of the project.
“The scope of work for the construction of the project has changed since we wanted to build a five-star hotel instead of a three-star hotel.
“The increase in cost was mainly due to the upgrading works for facilities at the hotel including a pedestrian bridge,” added Aziz.
