Sibu police arrest trio for drug trafficking

SIBU: Three men have been arrested for trafficking 1,019.10gms of methamphetamine on Thursday (June 18)

Sibu deputies OCPD Supt Collins Babat said the suspects, aged 24 to 25, and were remanded for six days to facilitate investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

The offence carries a mandatory death sentence by hanging if convicted.

Supt Collins said at about noon on June 18, acting on a tip-off, a team from the Anti-Narcotics Investigation Department nabbed a coffee shop helper, 25, at a courier company in Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

“The team found a packet labelled as ‘Refined Chinese Tea’ from the suspect. Inside was 1,019.10gms of methamphetamine,” he said.

The suspect later led the police team to a hotel in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce where two more suspects were apprehended. The duos, both 24, are jobless.

Police also seized an assortment of items worth a total of RM226,791.

They include a sports utility vehicle (RM120,000), jewellery (RM9,943), a car (RM45,000), a wristwatch (RM450) and gaming equipment (RM2,000).

“We cannot reveal the source of the drugs as the case is still under investigation but we believe that they are for the local market,” Supt Collins said.
