KUCHING: A peaceful assembly was held at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex here where the participants expressed their feelings on NCR lands. The assembly participants came from all walks of life in the state.
They felt that their efforts in protecting their NCR lands have gone in the drain due to the government’s actions of amending the land code.
Some of the participants said that their land have been taken or encroached by certain companies for the setting up of plantations and that they were not compensated. Many said that they have lost their cases at both the state court and federal court. It is believed that the assembly was held at three locations namely at the old DUN complex, State Court Building Complex and Kuching Waterfront.
However, the proposed assembly at the court building was cancelled and those who gathered there have to move to the old DUN complex.
Those who gathered at the Kuching Waterfront have marched on the newly opened Darul Hana Bridge, even though access on the bridge for the public has not been granted yet. The protest started early in the morning and lasted until the end of the DUN sitting yesterday.
A government representative made an appearance at the old DUN complex to receive a memorandum from a representative of the assembly participants which will be handed over to Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
