KUCHING: The Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Fu Jijun has officially anded his service here after the serving in Sarawak for two years.

A farewell ceremony was held at Imperial Hotel last Sunday and attended by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg accompanied by his wife, Datin Patinggi Dato Hajjah Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang. Earlier, Johari in his remarks thanked Fu for facilitating many knowledgeable trips and the signing of various Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Sarawak and China during his tenure.

“China is a lot more developed than us (Sarawak) as they have transcended into the era of digital economy in 2016 where the industry alone has contributed 35 percent of China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to 3.4 trillion USD.

“I believe that by 2021, which is just a few years away, China could have its GDP up to 55 percent on digital economy alone,” he said. The Chief Minister also decided to make use of China’s technology to construct Sarawak’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) upon comparing technologies and energy sources from other countries.

Johari then disclosed that Fu’s retirement from his position would be followed up by his promotion which will place him serving in other countries. However, he did not disclose any specific details on where Fu will be serving or what position he would hold. “We would like to welcome you back to Sarawak, with open arms as you consider Sarawak as your second home. Feel free to visit us and maybe try our LRT when it is completed in the future, as I have tried yours in China,” he said jokingly.

Meanwhile, in Fu’s speech, he expressed his gratitude to the many Chinese associations in the state for working hard in supporting the state government for building a prosperous and beautiful land. “You spare no efforts in promoting social union and harmony, Chinese education and culture, and also to the charity work of Sarawak.

“Ultimately, you make great ef for t in expanding China- Malaysia relationship hence making you guys the great and precious treasure of both Sarawak and Malaysia. “I am glad to have the opportunity of sharing your achievements and glory you gain in your homeland in the past two years and I hope in the future, I can come back to share your luck as Sarawak is my second home,” he pointed out.
