KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Batang Samarahan Bridge is now officially open for the public and set to spur the economic activities in the local areas.

According to Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi, the bridge is part of the rural connectivity which is important to connect urban and rural areas.

“We are expecting this bridge to become the main route for this area, and at the same time it will benefit the locals in terms of socio-economic activities and also opening up new areas,” said Julaihi after launching the RM110 million Batang Samarahan Bridge yesterday.

According to him, the bridge would complete the missing link that connects Kota Samarahan and Asajaya through the Kuching-Samarahan-Asajaya road.

The 774m bridge, which was completed ahead of schedule, was built according to the British Standard (BS5400) and provides a two-way dual-lane for vehicles such as motorcycles and cars, including a pedestrian walk and also a 3km approach road connecting the bridge to the nearest road.

The bridge would benefit about 70,000 people in Asajaya and reduce the travel time to 30 minutes compared to using ferry.

Also present were Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament Rubiah Wang and Sadong Jaya Assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo.
