KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) said the statement by Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr James Masing that the state’s reserves of RM31 billion should be spent by the present GPS government in order “to win the hearts of Sarawakians” and “determine that GPS continue to stay in power after the next state election” was irresponsible.

In a statement issued yesterday, UPP said the suggestion was ridiculous and unworthy of any State official, much less a Deputy Chief Minister.

“Our State reserves are savings built up over decades and are kept to ensure financial security for our future generations. The reserves belong to the people of Sarawak. They do not belong to GPS or any political party. The reserves are not an election fund to ensure that GPS will stay in power in the next State election.

“Any politician, whether he be from GPS or PH or BN, who thinks that he could spend away our children’s future is destined to lose the next State election.

“If the government was to even consider such a ludicrous suggestion to spend all the State’s reserves before the next election, our State’s financial rating in the international community will be irreparably damaged,” said the statement.

UPP called on the Chief Minister to reject outright such a suggestion and to declare that the State’s reserves will be preserved and protected by the GPS government.
