SIBU: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch has proposed that first aid kits be provided at food court centres under the jurisdiction of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
Its chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee said the proposal has been extended to SMC deputy chairman councillor Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
He said when the first aid kits are provided at all these places, MRCS can provide free basic aid training for food operators as part of efforts to fully equip them with first aid skills.
“In first aid, every minute counts. We cannot wait until the ambulance comes. Somebody needs to apply first aid knowledge to secure the lives of those who suddenly fall sick, this is very important.
“Hopefully, the council can bring up this matter. At least we have first aid kits so that during emergencies they can make use of this facility,” he said.
Chua said this when met by reporters during the launching ceremony of the branch Annual Flag Sales which was launched by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee yesterday (April 2) at Taman Selera Muhibbah.
He also stressed that the initiative will benefit the public as the location is quite far from the hospital and medical facilities.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar said he would bring the matter up to the council for consideration.
“We need to have first aid kits because as far as we can see, we only have fire extinguishers but not first aid kits. It is a good precaution for the customer as well as food operators to have at least one first aid kit in a hawker areas,” he said.
