KUCHING: The implementation of classroom based-assessment (PBD) is a good move as it shifts the focus from cramming for mid-year and end-of-year exams.

Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Macky Joseph (pic) said no mid-year and end-of year exams means that pupils have to learn throughout the year.

“This will ensure continuous learning to take place which is healthier than cramming.

“This however does not mean that teachers cannot test students. For example, teachers can still conduct spelling tests, short questions, and other forms of assessment as they see fit for their students. The pupils’ own teachers are the best assessors,” he pointed out when contacted yesterday.

He added that teachers are already doing PBD, which is already in the current assessment system.

“By removing the mid-year and end-of-year exams, teachers can focus on strengthening their skills in conducting PBD which is good for professional development.

“Hopefully, they are given more training on the best practices in conducting PBD. The best practices imparted in the training must be seen as a guidance, not mandatory.

“For classes with too many students (especially more than 40), assistance should be given such as splitting the class into two, assigning teacher assistants or team teaching, “ he said.

Macky said 2019 is the beginning of “fun-learning exam-less system” to take place.
