PADAWAN: Two drivers will be charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The two were detained during “Ops Mabuk” held at 5th Mile, Penrissen Road here from 11.30pm on Jan 4 until 3.30am on Jan 5.

Both drivers failed a breathalyser test (EBA II test).

The charge carries a maximum fine of RM6,000 or 12 months’ jail upon conviction. However, both were released on bail.

The operation was organised by Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD), Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Department (ITED) led by its ITED Enforcement chief ASP Kenny Charles Juta.

According to Padawan police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan, the operation was aimed at intoxicated motorists.

“This operation will be held from time to time, especially during weekends, to ensure a reduction in accident cases especially in the Padawan area.

“Members of the public are advised to always obey the traffic rules and regulations to avoid action being taken against them,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

A total of 118 vehicles were inspected during the operation. Out of the number, 38 summonses were issued on various offences such as expired road tax, no driving licence, modified vehicles and others.
