KUCHING: The Rolf Schnyder welfare association has contributed 488 tablet computers to aid the state government’s KIDS Bits and Bytes Digital Literacy Initiative.

Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdulllah said the initiative which was launched a year ago has succeeded in engaging students and empowering teachers in the realm of digital literacy.

“This Digital Literacy programme which was integrated into SeDidik’s primary curriculum is a monumental step which underscores our commitment to preparing our young students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.

“Aligned with our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, this integration ensures that our education system remains at the forefront of global advancements.

“None of this would have been possible without the unwavering dedication and collaboration of our partners namely Persatuan Kebajikan Rolf Schnyder, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus,” she said during the device handover session: Empowering Sarawak’s Future-Kids Bits and Bytes Digital Literacy Programme Takes a Lead Forward at Baitulmakmur Building II here today.

She stated that through intensive training sessions of the said programme, her ministry has equipped 117 SeDidik teachers with essential digital literacy skills in February and March 2024, ensuring they could effectively guide and inspire the future generations.

According to her, this year, a total of 61 centres will implement the programme as part of the main curriculum for 2024, involving 721 six-year-old children.

“We recognise the importance of nurturing digital literacy from an early age. Hence, we emphasise the significance of instilling internet safety and productive digital device usage habits in preschoolers. By starting early, we lay the groundwork for responsible and informed digital citizens of the future.

“Furthermore, our partnership with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus aims to inspire and cultivate the next generation of tech innovators. By igniting their passion for technology at a young age, we pave the way for a cohort of ICT professionals who will drive Sarawak’s digital economy forward,” she said.

Fatimah also pointed out that her ministry’s commitment to excellence extends beyond implementation; it encompasses continuous assessment and improvement.

“Led by Associate Professor Hugh Leong, an impact assessment initiative has been launched to evaluate the outcomes and impact of our efforts. By involving all stakeholders, we ensure that our initiatives remain relevant and effective,” she said.
