MIRI: The AGAPE Grace Methodist Church here is gearing up for the construction of its new building, with an expected completion time of two years.
Last Saturday, the groundbreaking ceremony was led by the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference’s President, Reverend Dr Lau Hui Ming.
The Church Building Committee Chairman, Aaron Hii, revealed that construction is set to begin in approximately three months.
“We are currently in the tender preparation phase. The construction phase will take around one and a half years to finish, followed by six months of renovation,” he mentioned.
The new church, situated at Jalan Shangrila here, will replace the current rented premises at Jalan Airport, MCITI Square, which cannot accommodate the growing congregation due to increased membership.
Hii stressed that the church’s expansion has been a longstanding objective.
“We began renting the current space in 2016, but as our numbers have grown, the space has become cramped and limiting. Therefore, we need a new facility to accommodate the expansion of our ministry,” he added.
In 2017, the church procured the land for the upcoming building. After years of planning and fundraising efforts, they have raised RM2 million thus far.
The total project cost is projected at RM4.4 million, encompassing construction and renovation.
The forthcoming three-story building will cover 16,000 square feet and feature a sanctuary hall capable of accommodating up to 350 individuals, a fellowship hall, church offices, seven Sunday School rooms, and a parsonage. The third level is for potential future expansion.
A representative from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), Low Suk Fong, was also in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Hii shared that the church had applied for funding from UNIFOR, but this year’s allocation has been depleted, and they are now awaiting next year’s budget.
“The application has been fully approved, but due to budget constraints, we will need to wait until next year for the funds to be processed,” he explained.
Looking forward, Hii expressed optimism that the new church building will draw more worshippers, particularly with the burgeoning housing developments nearby.
“I envision the church filled with more individuals, and our neighbours recognising the church’s presence and feeling God’s presence. With more people moving into the vicinity, I believe the congregation will continue to expand,” he added,
The upcoming AGAPE Grace Methodist Church building is poised to become a spiritual and communal focal point here, upholding its mission to cater to its expanding congregation and the broader community.
