KUCHING: The Swinburne Dragon Boat Club (SDBC) made waves at the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta (SIDBR) 2024.

One of its teams earned a semi-final spot in the competition that drew 54 teams from 21 countries.

Competing in three categories — International Premier Mix 12, International Premier Open 12, and International Premier Open 20 — the team displayed Swinburne Sarawak’s multicultural spirit, with members representing Sarawak, Johor, Penang, Kenya, and Myanmar.

Despite being composed mostly of first-time competitors, the International Premier Mix 12 crew powered through to the semi-finals after dominating their heats, defeating strong teams from the United Kingdom, Penang, and Putrajaya.

Meanwhile, the Open 12 and Open 20 crews achieved personal bests, recording times of 1:21 and 1:17 respectively.

Team coach and Swinburne alumnus Octavia Teo commended the paddlers for their resilience and commitment.

“This year, we faced a significant turnover, with members leaving for studies or graduating after 2023. While challenging, it was an opportunity to rebuild from the ground up, focusing on techniques, stamina and endurance.

“The team worked tirelessly under the sun to prepare for SIDBR 2024,” she said.

Team manager Dr. James Loi lauded the Mixed 12 crew for their ability to adapt and excel despite stiff competition.

“The paddlers rose to the occasion and showcased outstanding teamwork and determination,” he said.
