KUCHING: Bau lass Jesillia Rodes draws inspiration from New Zealand’s Portia Woodman and Sarawakian Cuthbertha Entai, who plays for the Malaysian national rugby team.
The 18-year-old rugby talent is passionate about the sport and recently helped her team secure an impressive 5-0 victory against Muara Tuang, further showcasing her skills and commitment.
“I’m really proud of our win, and I hope to keep improving my game.
“One of my dreams is to tackle one of my idols, Cuthbertha, the Malaysian rugby player I greatly admire,” Jesillia told Sarawak Tribune at the UNIMAS 10s Tournament 2024, at the Field C, on Saturday.
Cuthbertha, a growing figure in Sarawak women’s rugby, has played a major role in shaping Jesillia’s journey.
“Bertha is a role model for me. Her skill, determination, and leadership inspire me to push myself both on and off the field,” Jesillia shared.
While Cuthbertha has been a key influence, Jesillia’s ultimate source of inspiration is Portia Woodman, the legendary New Zealand rugby icon.
“Portia Woodman is my absolute favourite. I’ve followed her career closely, and her performances motivate me to reach new heights in rugby,” Jesillia explained.
Jesillia’s rugby journey began in secondary school, where she played from Form 4 to Form 5.
“I’ve always played in the open category, and one of my most memorable experiences was competing in the Albinus 10s tournament in Sibu,” she recalled.
Now, as a forward for Bau Lakers Rugby Club and a first-year Public Administration student at UiTM, Jesillia balances her studies with her passion for rugby.
“The Bau Lakers have played a key role in my development, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from my teammates and coaches,” she said.
Looking to the future, Jesillia has big dreams.
“With the inspiration of Portia Woodman and Cuthbertha, I’m determined to keep improving and pursue my love for rugby.
“I want to keep pushing myself to be the best I can be,” Jesillia added.
