MIRI: A flood task force has been activated for the Miri Division to enhance preparedness against potential flooding during the rainy season.
Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, who is minister-in-charge of the Miri Disaster Management Committee (MDMC), made the announcement during a press conference today following a meeting on flood preparations.
Lee highlighted that Miri has recently experienced an increase in flash floods, particularly in the city centre.
Reports include severe flooding of parking lots, disruptions to hotel operations, and the displacement of residents.
“The public has expressed significant concern, urging immediate actions and precautions to mitigate the impact of flooding,” he said.
To address these challenges, the MDMC has established a dedicated task force comprising representatives from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, the Public Works Department (JKR), and the Miri City Council. This team will focus on two primary objectives:
- Inspecting and clearing blockages in the drainage systems to prevent water stagnation; and
- Monitoring high-risk areas, including Canada Hill and Lutong Beach, where erosion and flooding have been recurring issues.
Special attention has been given to Lutong Beach near Bayshore Park, an area severely affected by coastal erosion.
Lee revealed that a temporary gabion wall constructed in 2022 has sustained damage due to strong waves.
In response, the MDMC has proposed the construction of a robust 200-metre-long rock revetment, estimated to cost RM2.2 million, to protect the shoreline and nearby residential areas.
“We are sending this proposal to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and seeking immediate funding to complete the project before weather conditions worsen,” Lee added.
The MDMC has also directed district disaster management committees in Subis, Baram, Telang Usan, Marudi, and Beluru to formulate flood contingency plans.
Acting Miri Resident Juan Ubit, who attended the meeting, echoed the importance of coordination among local and state agencies to mitigate flood risks.
With the task force in place and proactive measures underway, the MDMC aims to reduce the impact of flooding and ensure the safety and well-being of the Miri community.
