SERIAN: The 3rd Infantry Brigade of the Malaysian Armed Forces has deployed its troops to assist temporary evacuation centers (PPS) as part of Op Banjir, covering 28 centres across Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian districts.

According to 3rd Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier General Mohd Sauffi Omar, Serian has the highest number of PPS, with 18 centres currently in operation.

He said the 11th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD 11) has been assigned to provide support in the district.

“In terms of deployment, the brigade has mobilised two combat boats and outboard motors (OBM) in Kuching and Samarahan districts.

“Meanwhile, in Serian, our focus is primarily on logistical support, including transporting equipment and food supplies from depots to the PPS, as well as managing the centres alongside other government agencies,” he said when met at the PPS Dewan Masyarakat Serian here today (Jan 30).

Sauffi added given the current weather conditions, the need for assistance is expected to continue for another two to three days.

“The Third Brigade remains ready to assist public agencies in carrying out flood relief operations,” he assured.

The PPS at Dewan Masyarakat Serian is currently sheltering 209 flood victims from three nearby villages—Kampung Hulu, Kampung Hilir, and Kampung Bunga Siantan.

The centre has been in operation since Jan 28 to accommodate those affected by the floods.

Meanwhile, a total of 18 PPS have been set up in Serian, housing 1,624 evacuees as of 9 am today.
