PUTRAJAYA: National Unity Minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, has called on citizens to work together to strengthen the bonds between religions, ethnicities and cultures.
On the occasion of World Interfaith Harmony Week (WIHW) he reminded that harmony is not a state that exists automatically, but requires continuous effort from all parties to sustain it.
“Each of us has a responsibility to be an agent of change in building a peaceful, prosperous, and united Malaysia Madani,” he said in a press statement today (Feb 4).
He said that Malaysia is a country rich in diversity, with communities practicing various religions and beliefs.
If properly nurtured, this uniqueness can become a strength that shapes the nation’s identity, he pointed out.
“‘Understand, Respect, Accept’ are values that must be instilled at every level of society to ensure that our country continues to serve as a global example of how religious and cultural diversity can be harmonised to create a truly united nation,” he added.
To further enhance interfaith harmony, several key initiatives must be prioritised by all stakeholders, he said, adding that constructive dialogue among religious adherents is the best way to foster understanding and reduce tensions.
Towards this end he called for more interfaith forums at various levels, involving religious leaders, academics, community leaders, and the younger generation.
Such dialogue sessions are crucial in breaking down prejudices caused by ignorance, he said.
To mark World Interfaith Harmony Week, the Ministry will continue to focus on initiatives that promote religious harmony.
“Programmes scheduled for the celebration include the Jejak Harmoni Metasemesta (Feb 14 to Feb 16), Perarakan Harmoni (Feb 15 and Feb 16), Program Jejak Harmoni (Feb 15), Dialog Harmoni (Feb 16), and the HARMONI Committee Meeting (Feb 19),”he said.
