KUCHING: The spirit of the oldest school in Sarawak, St Mary’s School, came alive and was filled with vibrance as ex-Marians, young and old, gathered at the Sarawak Chamber Ballroom, Riverside Majestic Kuching last night (Feb 8).
The joyous event, themed ‘Night of Love’, was filled with nostalgia, music, and heartfelt reunions, reinforcing the school’s legacy as Sarawak’s oldest and most prestigious school.
The night started with singing the national anthem, the state anthem, and the school anthem, a reminder to ex-Marians of their school days in assembly.
Old Marians’ Association (OMA) President Valarie Sharon Yong said the evening celebrates the enduring bonds among Marian alumni, honouring the love and unity that have withstood time and distance.
“This annual dinner is more than just a celebration; it is a reunion of old friends, a rekindling of cherished memories, and an opportunity to strengthen the bonds that tie us as Marians.

“Whether you graduated last year or decades ago, tonight reminds us of the shared experiences and values that unite us as Marian alumni.
“Let us take this time to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the enduring spirit of our beloved school.
“As we enjoy the evening ahead, let us also remember the importance of giving back to this institution that has given us so much,” she said during her opening address.
A video presentation on the school’s development left many senior ex-Marians in awe, showing changes they had never seen during their time at St Mary’s.
The night continued with entertainment, showcasing ex-Marians’ incredible talents with a mesmerising sape performance by Jennifer Santa Liman, followed by a captivating live band performance by the Lock N Load led by Kathleen Nandong and Ainul Riza as well as Datin Dona Drury-Wee, whose performances brought the hall to life.
A toasting ceremony and cake-cutting brought the night to a fitting climax, symbolising St Mary’s enduring legacy and unwavering bond among its alumni.

True to the declaration of all ex-Marians, “Once a Marian, Always a Marian,” it stood as a testimony that St Mary’s School had nurtured accomplished and principled individuals.
As the night drew to a close, ex-Marians departed with renewed pride and strengthened friendships, eager to carry forward the school’s rich tradition of excellence and unity.
With 177 years of history behind it, St Mary’s School stands tall and proud as a beacon of education, culture, and sisterhood in Sarawak.
Also in attendance at the anniversary dinner were Datin Amar Evelyn Ritikos, Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Reverend Johnson Lapok Anggat, Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain, and Datin Amar Dona Drury-Wee.
