KUCHING: Sarawak’s under-19 cricket boys team secured a 6-wicket victory against Johor at the MCA Men’s U19 Interstate Championship 2024.

The team’s coach, Chew Pok Cheong, said the team’s goal is to top the group, as they are currently in second place based on net run rate.

“We need to focus on winning all our matches by a big margin to improve our run rate.

“Most of our players are 17-year-olds from last year’s Sukma team, and we’ve also brought in three youngsters from the U-15 team to expose them to this level of tournament,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted on Thursday (Feb 20).

Chew added that many of the senior players still have the potential to play in two more Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“Moslty this senior boys still can play another two Sukma,” he added.

He expects his players to gain valuable experience from this tournament and perform well.

“My expectation is that our boys will learn more from playing alongside foreign players and showcase strong performances in both bat and bowl,” he said.

The win against Johor marks Sarawak’s first victory in Group C, which consists of Sarawak, Johor, Perak, and Melaka.

With this win, the team’s confidence grows as they aim to do well in the group.
