KUCHING: The Pasar Malam Belia N6 Metrocity 2 has seen a surge in visitors since relocating to a larger venue on January 1 — with a peak of 8,000 visitors recorded on the weekend before the school term began.
According to Pasar Malam Belia N6 Metrocity 2 chairman Mohammad Khairuzie Bolhassan, the new space has attracted both traders and shoppers in greater numbers.
“Since January 1, we have been operating at this new venue. In the first week, we estimated around 5,000 visitors per day.
“We are now monitoring the first week after school has started to see if the numbers remain high,” he said this after accompanying Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on latter’s visit to the night market last night (Feb 22).
The night market now accommodates 435 stalls — 180 of which are dedicated to goods, clothing, and other items — compared to the 300 vendors it previously housed.
“The Premier of Sarawak was impressed because, previously, when we met, we only had around 300 vendors.
“The expansion has also led to fully occupied parking areas, with three sections behind and three in front now completely filled. This shows that the crowd is much larger now,” he added.
Mohammad Khairuzie shared that the night market operates every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 4 pm to midnight.
“During Ramadan, it will be open daily until the 28th of Ramadan,” he said.
During his visit, Abang Johari toured the market, engaging with traders and mingling with the crowd in a relaxed and casual setting.
In a symbolic gesture, the Premier signed a plaque bearing the words “Premier Sarawak Ada Santai Sitok” — marking his support for the local initiative.
