KUCHING: The announcement of a 6.30 per cent dividend rate for both Conventional and Shariah Savings by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is a positive development that is expected to benefit not only contributors but also businesses and the broader economy, said Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS).

Its president Datuk Abang Helmi Ikhwan pointed out that this rate reflects a commitment to providing competitive returns to members, which is crucial for enhancing their retirement savings.

“The total payout of RM73.24 billion signifies a strong financial performance by the EPF, demonstrating its ability to manage investments effectively in a challenging economic environment.

“This level of return can enhance public confidence in the EPF as a reliable institution for retirement savings,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

He believes that the dividend announcement will have significant implications for businesses and consumer spending.

“A higher dividend rate can lead to improved financial security for employees, as they will see their retirement savings grow more significantly.

“This can enhance employee morale and productivity, as workers may feel more secure about their financial futures.

“Moreover, increased financial security can also reduce stress among employees, potentially leading to better job performance and lower turnover rates,” he said.

Additionally, Helmi opined that the higher dividends could lead to an increase in consumer spending, particularly in key sectors such as retail, hospitality, and services.

“With more disposable income and greater confidence in their long-term savings, contributors may be more willing to spend, stimulating demand for goods and services.

“This, in turn, benefits businesses, encouraging expansion and investment, which could create new job opportunities.

Overall, he views the EPF dividend announcement as a strategic move that benefits both individual contributors and the broader economy.

“The EPF’s dividend announcement is a strategic move that not only benefits individual contributors but also has the potential to positively impact the broader economy by fostering consumer confidence and spending, which are vital for business growth and economic stability,” he said.
