KUCHING: National athlete Michael Ford, 36, has carved his name in the history books after winning the super heavyweight (125kg and above) championship title at the prestigious Arnold Classic Arm-Wrestling Championship on Feb 28.

The Sabahan powerhouse clinched the champion’s title after beating Anthony Sciglitano in the finals held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Ohio, United States.

“Every year, Arnold Schwarzenegger hosts this iconic fitness event, second only to Mr. Olympia. Arm-wrestling has always been a part of it, and past winners include legends of the sport.

“To have my name added to that list was without a doubt an incredible honour,” the 36-year-old shared with Sarawak Tribune recently.

The journey to victory was anything but easy. Michael knew that a moment’s lapse in concentration could cost him everything.

“I had flown so far, and the last thing I wanted was to lose because of a small mistake or foul. My only focus was staying sharp and executing my game plan,” he said.

Despite having immersed in the sport for 12 years, the Shamrock Irish Bar (based in KK Waterfront) co-owner had only shifted gears professionally from the last few years – where he then dedicated himself to represent Malaysia on the international circuit.

His ambition for the year does not stop here — Michael is now gearing up for the national and overall national championships in July, followed by another competition in the USA under his first pro card with The High Five Arm-Wrestling — the same organisers behind the Arnold Classic event.

With this monumental victory under his belt, the Bornean has cemented his place as one of Malaysia’s top arm-wrestlers and a formidable force on the world stage.
