KUCHING: Sarawak is moving forward with its vision to establish Sarawak Tech City by deepening its collaboration with Barcelona’s technology sector.

A delegation, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, visited Tech Barcelona to explore potential partnerships and strengthen ties with the city’s dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Accompanied by Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan, director of the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), and senior officials from the Sarawak Government, the visit on Wednesday (Feb 5) aimed to enhance collaboration with Barcelona’s expertise in innovation, smart city solutions and digital transformation to position Sarawak as a regional hub for technology and entrepreneurship.

Discussions centred on digital infrastructure, talent development, startup incubation and collaboration between industry and academia, drawing from Barcelona’s achievements as a leading global innovation hub.

The visit represented a crucial step in this growing partnership, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to building a world-class technology ecosystem and positioning the state as a major player in Southeast Asia’s digital economy.

This cooperation between Sarawak and Barcelona was first initiated during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 and has since been actively pursued through efforts led by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).
