DAMMAM: Date markets across Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Region are bustling with high sales as Ramadan begins, with customers seeking a variety of dates and processed date products.

A staple of the iftar table and a Sunnah recommended by Prophet Muhammad, dates help replenish sugar levels, boost energy, and offer high nutritional value. Despite the availability of modern foods, they remain deeply embedded in Saudi culture. The Eastern Region’s markets offer over 15 types of dates, including Khalas, Sukkari, Shishi, Ajwa, and Rizez, sourced from Al-Ahsa, Qatif, Qassim, and Madinah.

Vendors also stock processed date products such as molasses, tahini, ma’amoul, date balls, and natural sweeteners. Date seller Ahmad Al-Mahdi noted that demand surges about five days before Ramadan, with Khalas and Sukkari being the top choices. He highlighted regional specialties: Al-Ahsa for Khalas and Shishi, Qassim for Sukkari and Rashoudiah, and Madinah for Ajwa and Mabroom. Prices vary by type, size, and quality. Another seller, Saad Siraj, said sales have doubled as Ramadan approaches, with stores ensuring a wide selection to cater to different tastes. – BERNAMA
