BINTULU: The fire tragedy that destroyed 17 houses in Sungai Plan, Jalan Tanjung Kidurong here recently has drawn the attention of various parties, prompting an emergency assistance program to support the affected victims.
Infrastructure and Port Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, emphasised the need for accelerated resettlement planning for high-risk communities like those in Sungai Plan to ensure long-term safety.
“The priority now is to ensure that the victims receive temporary shelter.
“However, plans for new settlement areas must be expedited to ensure their long-term safety,” he told the press during the ‘Memacu Kehidupan Bantuan Bencana Kebakaran Sungai Plan’ programme organised by Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), a subsidiary of PETRONAS, recently.
Also present to provide support and assistance were representatives from the Bintulu Resident’s Office and District Office, the police, fire department, Malaysian Civil Defence Force, and senior management of MLNG.
Meanwhile, MLNG donated various essential items, including mattresses, pillows, food, clothing, hygiene supplies and school equipment.
Initial contributions were also made by the Social Welfare Department and the local Methodist church shortly after the incident.
The programme also provided basic aid to 93 fire victims, who are now homeless.
The fire also claimed the life of an elderly individual.
