KUCHING: Sarawak has the potential to become one of the world’s top destinations for nature and eco-adventures through efforts to upgrade several iconic sites.

These include the Sabal Forest Reserve, Mount Gading and Tanjung Datu.

With careful planning and the provision of modern infrastructure, these areas have the potential to become major tourist attractions, offering stunning natural experiences and unrivalled biodiversity treasures.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that the upgrading efforts aim to open up more tourism opportunities and support the state’s economic sector, especially in attracting visitors who appreciate the beauty of nature.

“Tourists who come to Sarawak often do not miss the opportunity to visit nature sanctuaries rich in biodiversity.

“If areas like Sabal, Mount Gading and Tanjung Datu are rejuvenated with better facilities, I believe more tourists will be drawn to making Sarawak their destination of choice,” he said after attending the Nidji Pelangi in Kuching Concert 2025 on Saturday.

Abdul Karim added that the upgrading efforts are not only aimed at strengthening the tourism sector but also at preserving the natural treasures that are Sarawak’s valuable assets.

Thus, he emphasised that cooperation between the government and local communities is crucial to ensure that the development brings long-term benefits without compromising environmental sustainability.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recently announced plans to upgrade the Sabal Forest Reserve, including the development of modern accommodation facilities to boost tourism.

He said the government aims to provide comfortable amenities at Sabal so that visitors can not only enjoy the natural beauty but also stay longer and gain a deeper understanding of the state’s biodiversity.
