KUCHING: An overwhelming 436 applications were received to participate in the MCMC Microsoft AI Teach: Skills for an AI-Enabled Economy programme which was launched today.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak Director, Scott Kueh, said the enthusiastic response underscored Sarawakians’ eagerness to embrace digital opportunities.

“The high interest in this programme signals that Sarawakians are ready to move forward into the digital age, equipped with future-proof skills,” he said at the launch of the two-day programme at CENTEXS Santubong.

The programme is designed to upskill communities in artificial intelligence (AI), and bridge the digital divide, fostering digital inclusion across Sarawak.

Due to limited capacity, it eventually involved more than 260 participants, including those joining remotely from 15 selected National Digital Network (NADI) centres and six Digital Innovation Hubs across Sarawak.

“This initiative goes beyond introducing AI technology,” said Kueh.

“It offers inclusive learning opportunities, especially for rural and remote communities, ensuring that Sarawak’s digital transformation leaves no one behind.

“It aligns with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, which charts the path toward a regionally competitive, inclusive digital society.”

NADI centres played a key role in extending the programme’s reach.

These centres, which function as both Internet access points and training hubs, have been vital in bridging the digital divide.

With more than 150 NADI centres operating across Sarawak, they provide training in ICT, entrepreneurship and e-learning, specifically targetting young people, housewives and small businesses.

Selected NADI centres involved in this programme included those in Kampung Jaya Sepakat, Kampung Kuap (Kuching), Sibuloh, Kampung Stunggang Baru (Bau and Lundu), Sekuau, Bawang Assan (Sibu) and several others in Kapit, Bintulu, Mukah, Marudi and Miri.

“The participation of rural communities demonstrates the inclusive approach of this initiative, ensuring that even those in remote areas can access AI training and prepare for future digital jobs,” Kueh added.

The MCMC Microsoft AI Teach programme aims to train 1,600 individuals nationwide, enhancing their employability in a rapidly evolving job market.

Upon completion, 1,000 selected participants will be linked to job placement platforms like MyFutureJobs under Perkeso, opening doors to careers in the digital and technology sectors.

In the long term, Kueh emphasised that this programme supports Sarawak’s vision of producing not just technology users, but digital creators, problem solvers, and innovators.

Early exposure to AI lays the foundation for a more adaptable, productive, and prosperous society, one that is prepared to navigate the digital economy.
