KOTA SAMARAHAN: A new training centre for boxing opened here yesterday to enhance the development of the sport in the state.
The centre is being run by none other than former national boxer and 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Major Sapok Biki.
Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (Saba) president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo who officiated the opening ceremony yesterday said: “With the setting up of this new centre, we hope to unearth boxing talents, especially from Samarahan division,” said Rahman
Managed by Saba, the centre is the eighth one in Sarawak after the centres in Tatau, Saratok, Betong, Sri Aman, Asajaya, Kapit and Kuching.
Rahman also urged the youths from Kota Samarahan and other areas to get free boxing lessons from the former national boxer.
“I like to thank Major Sapok Biki for allowing Saba to use his own house for the centre,”he added.
Rahman said Saba has 70 trainee boxers throughout the state who are under the guidance of Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) coach, Wilbur Andogan and chief coach Mohd Herman Musa.
He hoped that all boxing enthusiasts who wanted to come and train at the centre to call Sapok Biki at 013-7208896 or come to the centre at Lot 9339, (SL.45) Uni Garden Phase 6, Kuching-Samarahan Expressway, Kota Samarahan.
