SARAWAK is moving towards achieving a fully integrated and efficient traffic management system, with 173 out of 342 traffic lights statewide already upgraded to smart systems, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

He said the state is working closely with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to ensure all future installations of traffic light systems are consistent and interoperable.

“All new systems are required to utilise proven real-time traffic management technologies and adhere to open standards for seamless integration with the Centralised Traffic Monitoring and Control Centre,”he said.

He said this in his ministerial winding up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.

He said currently, a total of 173 traffic lights have been upgraded, with the highest number in Kuching at 92, followed by Miri with 30, Bintulu 19, Sibu 12, Samarahan 9, Serian 4, Sarikei 3, Mukah 2, and one each in Limbang and Kapit,

“Efforts are ongoing to upgrade the remaining 169 traffic lights across Sarawak,” he added.

On the issue of road safety, Lee noted that the state recorded 21,733 road accidents in 2024, resulting in 362 fatalities, a 1.5 per cent increase compared to 2023.

“Between January and April 2025 alone, he said 6,724 accidents were reported, with 108 fatalities.”
