THE Sarawak government is currently undertaking a technical and economic feasibility study for the Tanjung Embang Deep Sea Port.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the progress included site investigation, bathymetric surveys, tidal observations, sea current measurements, soil investigations and environmental impact assessments.

“These assessments are crucial to determine the port’s design, engineering parameters, long-term sustainability, and financial viability of the development,” he said.

Uggah, who is also the Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, said this in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

He also said Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) is currently undertaking an integrated master planning to ensure coordination across all components, including port infrastructure, energy systems, carbon capture, and industrial layout.

“PETROS is also in the process of engaging qualified international technical consultants to lead the development of the Kuching Low Carbon Hub (KLCH) masterplan,” he said.

On the update of the Sarawak Ports Authority, Uggah said with the passage of the Sarawak Ports Authority Ordinance in May 2024, the Sarawak government has been progressing towards the operationalisation of the single port authority, Sarawak Ports Authority, with regulatory jurisdiction over all port activities in the state.

“Concurrently, the corporatisation of existing port authorities as successor companies at each port to manage port assets and operations is undertaken in tandem with the State Financial Secretary’s Office.

“The exercise is expected to conclude by the fourth quarter of this year,” he said.

On the Bintulu Port, Uggah said despite the complex challenges inherent in such a major undertaking, the change of status of Bintulu Port from federal to state jurisdiction is now in its final negotiation stages, with full transfer anticipated within the year.
