Outing turns tragic as woman drowns in waterfall

SARIKEI: An outing to Wong Ruan Waterfall turned tragic yesterday (Jun 9) when a young woman was found drowned while swimming with her teenage friend.

The victim, identified as Nur Afiqah Jemat, 20, had gone to the popular waterfall in Ulu Sarikei with a 14-year-old companion when tragedy struck.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), it received an emergency call at 4.15 pm and wasted no time dispatching a team from the Sarikei station to the scene.

Nur Afiqah is believed to have drowned while swimming, prompting her friend to seek help from nearby villagers.

The villagers went to the scene and pulled Nur Afiqah from the water at around 3.45 pm. However, she was unresponsive.

Police arrived at the scene at 6.05 pm, followed by paramedics at 6.13 pm, who later confirmed that the victim had died.

Her body was handed over to the police to be transported to the hospital for a post-mortem.
