SARATOK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is scheduled to make an official working visit to Saratok this Sunday (June 22) for two main events.

Kalaka state assemblyman, Mohamad Duri, revealed the matter and expressed that Zahid’s presence is highly welcomed.

“Firstly, Dr Ahmad Zahid is expected to officiate the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the construction of the Kupang-Bajau Road, which is a key project under his ministry, the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW).

“Secondly, he will be attending a Gawai Dayak ngabang (visiting) event at Selambong Longhouse,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

He explained that Zahid’s visit is hoped to give him a closer look at the needs of rural communities, especially in Saratok.

For the record, the official contract handover for the Kupang-Bajau Road Construction Project to the appointed contractor, FDZ Engineering Sdn. Bhd., took place on January 14, marking the beginning of fieldwork.

The construction period for the RM112.9 million project is 32 months, with expected completion in September 2027. The scope includes paving 16.9 kilometers of road to JKR R2 standard and 3.0 kilometers to R1 standard, road drainage systems, five bridges, and other necessary infrastructure.

Mohamad also expressed his gratitude to KKDW for realising the project with increased funding from RM90 million to RM112.9 million.

“This clearly shows the commitment of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Government and the Malaysian MADANI Government in providing basic infrastructure for rural residents,” he said.

Regarding complaints of road damage during construction, Mohamad urged the Public Works Department (JKR) and the contractor to ensure that the road is consistently well maintained, especially during the rainy season, which worsens the road conditions and makes it difficult for regular vehicles to pass.
