KUCHING: Parent-teacher associations (PTA) are vital partners in ensuring the success of education, especially by supporting schools and student development.

Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, said the PTA’s active role is proof that education is a shared responsibility, not one borne by schools alone.

He commended Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jalan Arang’s PTA for organising the Teacher’s Day and Sijil Pendidikan Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards celebration and for supporting both students and educators.

“By recognising students’ successes and honouring our teachers, you show what strong collaboration between school and community can achieve,” he said.

He was speaking at SMK Jalan Arang’s celebration, held at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multipurpose Hall today.

Lo asserted that teachers carry out their duties not only with professionalism but with compassion and genuine care for their students’ growth and well-being.

He pointed out that teachers are mentors, motivators and role models to the future generation.

“Your dedication helps build a better Sarawak. We owe you our thanks not just today, but every day,” he said.

He also called for continued cooperation between families, schools and leaders to provide children with the support they need to thrive.

He stressed that values such as integrity, humility, resilience and kindness should remain at the heart of students’ personal and academic development.

“Education is not just about grades. It’s about shaping individuals who will contribute meaningfully to their community and to Sarawak’s future,” he added.

To students, he congratulated the high achievers, describing their SPM results as a reflection of their discipline, hard work, and perseverance through challenges.

Lo reminded them that academic success is only one step, and that they must now look ahead toward future goals and their role in society.

“Let this be a milestone, not a final destination. Your journey has just begun. Keep learning, dreaming, and striving to make a difference,” he said.

He also urged students to show gratitude to those who helped them through the journey, especially their parents and teachers who never gave up on them.

“They are just as proud as you are today. Success is sweeter when shared with those who stood by you during difficult times,” he said.
